الطريق المقدس

كان شارع فيا ساكرا ( باللاتينية : Sacra Via ، " الشارع المقدس ") الشارع الرئيسي في روما القديمة ، ويمتد من أعلى تل الكابيتول ، مروراً ببعض أهم المواقع الدينية في المنتدى (حيث يكون أوسع شارع)، وصولاً إلى الكولوسيوم .

كان الطريق جزءًا من المسار التقليدي لموكب النصر الروماني الذي يبدأ من ضواحي المدينة ويمر عبر المنتدى الروماني . وفي وقت لاحق، تم رصفه. وخلال عهد نيرون ، تم تزيينه بأروقة .

شكّل هذا الطريق مسرحًا للعديد من الأحداث والفضائح في تاريخ روما، من الأعياد الدينية المهيبة إلى انتصارات القادة العسكريين الباهرة، مرورًا بالحشود اليومية التي كانت تتجمع في الكنائس للدردشة، ولعب النرد، وممارسة الأعمال التجارية، أو السعي لتحقيق العدالة. كما اصطفت العديد من البغايا على جانبي الطريق بحثًا عن زبائن محتملين. ومنذ عهد أغسطس، لعب طريق فيا ساكرا دورًا في مراسم التأليه التي كان يُقام فيها تأليه الأباطرة الرومان المتوفين رسميًا . وكان جثمان الإمبراطور، مغطى بقناع شمعي ، يُحمل على نعش من تل بالاتين إلى أسفل طريق فيا ساكرا وصولًا إلى المنتدى الروماني، حيث تُلقى خطب الجنازة قبل أن يستأنف موكب الفرسان وأعضاء مجلس الشيوخ مساره إلى ساحة مارس . ^{[ 1 ]}

While the western stretch of the Via Sacra which runs through the Forum follows the original ancient route of the road, the eastern stretch between the end of the forum and the Colosseum, which passes underneath the Arch of Titus, is a redirection of the road built after the Great Fire of Rome in AD 64.^[2] In the Republic and Early Empire, the route forked to the north near the House of the Vestals and passed through a saddle in the Velian Hill, now occupied largely by the Basilica of Maxentius and the modern Via dei Fori Imperiali. As part of his rebuilding program following the fire, Nero essentially straightened the road by redirecting it between the Velian and Palatine Hills, creating grand colonnades on either side for shop stalls and commerce.^[3] At the east side was built under Hadrian and Antoninus Pius the temple of Venus and Roma.
