معايير
يعيّن رئيس البلدية ومجلس المدينة لجنةً مؤلفةً من تسعة أعضاء تُعنى بمعالم شيكاغو التاريخية، وذلك لوضع توصيات بشأن المعالم التاريخية وفقًا لقانون مدينة شيكاغو الصادر عام ١٩٦٨. [ ٢ ] وتنظر اللجنة في ترشيح المناطق والأحياء والأماكن والمباني والمنشآت والأعمال الفنية وغيرها من الأشياء داخل مدينة شيكاغو، بناءً على استيفاء كل منها لمعيارين أو أكثر من المعايير التالية: [ ٣ ]

تاريخ
في شيكاغو، سعت حركة الحفاظ على التراث التاريخي في البداية إلى ضمان بقاء المباني الفردية ذات الأهمية الخاصة. As noted in the list above, there are many places that are designated as City landmarks but they have not been nationally registered. There are also approximately 200 nationally Registered Historic Places in Chicago that are not also designated Chicago Landmarks.[200] Of these, 13 are further designated as U.S. National Historic Landmarks:
